Gumtara is a lesser known fort located in the Tungareshwar sanctuary, 13 km north east from Kamandurg Fort and 24 km south east from Takmak Fort. It is a beautiful trek with a path climbing through the jungle.
Trek Name : Gumtara fort
Height :1950 ft
Grade : Medium
Base Village : Sanghvi
Region : Bhivandi-Tungareshwar.
There is no record of who built this fort. This fort must have been built to keep a watch on the Tansa river and surrounding area.
The first reference to this fort was in 1689, when news of Sambhaji's (Shivaji's son) capture reached Matabar Khan - the Mughal subhedar of Nasik, he took the opportunity to march south to capture Mahuli Fort and Gumtara (then known as Gotara) fort as well as surrounding areas all the way up to Kalyan (ref).
Gumtara Fort, in Bhiwndi taluka of Thane District, on a hill 1949 feet high. The path to reach the fort can be accessed from the three base villages of Dugaad, Mohili and Usgaon, Brahmanpada. One has to hike through either from Moili village to reach the fort. The fort top can be reached by a 2.5 Hrs steep hike through the forest. After 1.5 to 2 Hrs of climb, one reaches on a plateau and then another 30 to 40 minutes hike takes you to the top. The top has a group of 7 water cisterns but only 1 holds water which is not potable. One more water cistern is full of mud and trees. So carry enough water when visit. The fort has a fortification wall and the gomukhi style entrance between 2 bastions is in dilapidated condition. There is no shelter on top.
The entire hill has been covered by dense vegetation and the routes for access to the fort have been well hidden which makes it difficult to reach. Many structures might have been lost in this dense forest cover.
This fort must have been existent since Shilahar era. Later during Maratha rule Shivaji Maharaj refurbished this fort. On 24th March 1737, during the campaign of Vasai, after leaving from Mahuli fort the Peshwas rested in the jungle at the base but due to absence of water they could not hold for long and thus had to move ahead.
